A Spanish nurse who became infected with Ebola was last night cleared of all traces of the virus.

Nursing assistant Teresa Romero Ramos’s immune system eliminated the virus, a blood test revealed.

The news was broken in a statement released by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s office.

Manuel Cuenca, microbiology director at Madrid’s Carlos III health care complex, says a second test was needed to absolutely confirm her recovery.

The 44-year-old’s dog Excalibur was put down earlier this month because health officials feared he may also be carrying Ebola.

That was despite street protests in Madrid and a nationwide social media campaign dedicated to saving him.

Ms Ramos, 44, had treated two patients who died of Ebola at Carlos III hospital. The first, Miguel Pajares, contracted the disease in Liberia and died on August 12, despite having been treated with the drug ZMapp.
Manuel Garcia Viejo, 69, became the second victim when he died on September 25.
