A nongovernmental organization, Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF) has decried the increasing rate of internal trafficking in the country saying that thousands of children are suffering in the hands of their traffickers.

Daily Trust report continues:

The group said children were being taken away from their homes to other states to serve as house-helps or in some cases exploited, used as cheap labour, either hawking on the street or maltreated.

The National Coordinator of WOTCLEF, Mrs. Veronica Umaru, who was courtesy visit to Daily Trust said the organization which was established in 1999 has not fizzled out like others because of its mandate on trafficking, child labour and protection of the right of women, children and youth.

According to her internal trafficking was now trending and unfortunately it is not getting enough attention as most people only know about external trafficking.

Umaru said last year the organization rehabilitated 20 trafficked victims made up of 17 girls and three boys within the age of 18 to 22 and also empowered and reintegrated them back into the society.
While noting that over 500 cases have been treated by the group, she said Edo State has been the hub of trafficking while Imo, Anambra, Abia and Cross River states also has high indices.
