Briefing newsmen yesterday at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Uyo, the chief press secretary to the state governor, Mr. Ekerete Udo said that it is the practice worldwide to restrict access to the site of the ill-fated church and that only authorized investigators cleared for that purpose would be allowed.
Represented by Mr. Raphael Edem, Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Relations, he urged members of the public to discountenance any purported claims of inquiry or investigation into the tragedy by any organization or entity as the panel set up by the government is made up of seasoned professionals in engineering and building construction.
The work of the panel he said, would be independent, fair and thorough. ‘’We wish to restate for avoidance of doubt that any person found culpable would be made to face the full weight of the law irrespective of tribe, religion or status in the society,’’ he stated.
Udo explained that in the aftermath of the incident Governor Emmanuel personally supervised rescue effort and evacuation of several victims to the hospitals for immediate medical attention and also ensured that specialist medical experts were immediately brought from other part of the country to assist in managing the critical cases arising from the disaster.
