Ex-Burkina Faso President Gains Côte d'Ivoire Citizenship

Mr Compaoré was in power for 27 years AFP

Côte d'Ivoire has given Burkina Faso's ousted ruler Blaise Compaoré citizenship, reports the BBC.

Côte d'Ivoire does not extradite its nationals so it is unlikely that Mr Compaoré will be sent back to Burkina Faso to stand trial for his alleged role in the 1987 murder of ex-President Thomas Sankara.

He has always denied involvement in the murder.

Mr Compaoré fled to Côte d'Ivoire in 2014 following a popular uprising against his bid to extend his 27-year rule.
