THISDAY reports that lack of gas supply is delaying takeoff of the 563 megawatts (MW) Calabar National Integrated Power Plant (NIPP) located in Odukpani LGA, Cross River State.

The report states:

But for the unexpected lack of commitment to agreements signed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Plc with Addax Petroleum to supply gas to the 563 megawatts (MW) Calabar National Integrated Power Plant (NIPP), the new power plant would have been active and contributing to Nigeria’s electricity generation profile by now.

THISDAY recently learnt from credible sources at the combined open cycle plant, which is located in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, that it had long attained 95 per cent completion, but the technical commissioning of its generating turbines could not take place because there was no gas as expected from Addax.

This has thus left the plant inactive and waiting for gas supply for its technical commissioning before coming on stream.

But in spite of this delay, the project consultant, Steag Encotec West Africa (SEWA) and its Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor, Marubeni West Africa, told Vice President Namadi Sambo, who recently visited the plant that the Balance of Plant (BoP) commissioning at the plant will begin in December following the expected delivery of first gas by the new supplier, ACCUGAS in October.
