Former NBA guard Rex Chapman has been arrested for allegedly shoplifting US$14,000 worth of merchandise from an Apple store in Scottsdale and then selling the items at a pawn shop, AP/ABC report.

Chapman, 46, was arrested on Friday at approximately 1:45 p.m. after police stopped his vehicle in northeast Scottsdale.

The Apple store where the alleged thefts occurred is in the Scottsdale Quarter retail center at Scottsdale Road and Greenway Parkway.

Police began investigating the case in August when employees reported a series of shoplifting incidents involving the same suspect over a period of a few months.

The suspect was identified by multiple employees as Rex Chapman because of his previous celebrity status as an NBA basketball player.

Police said Chapman allegedly picked up items in the store and made it appear that he was paying for them with an iPhone app through the store's self-checkout system.

He would then leave the store without actually paying for the items. He allegedly took merchandise to a local pawn shop and sold it for cash.

Chapman is reportedly facing nine felony counts of Organized Retail Theft and Trafficking in Stolen Goods. Chapman, drafted in 1988, spent 12 years in the NBA as a player and several years after in both media and front-office roles, including a stint as vice president of player development for the Denver Nuggets.

Chapman reportedly made US$22 million during his NBA career.

Chapman, a former Kentucky star, was a first-round draft pick of Charlotte in 1988. He also played for Washington, Miami and Phoenix in a 12-year NBA career that ended in 2000.
After retiring from active play Chapman remained with the Suns, first as a scout and later as Director of Basketball Operations. For the 2004 and 2005 NBA Playoffs, he served as a color commentator on TNT. In 2005, he moved from Phoenix to accept a personnel scout position with the Minnesota Timberwolves. In 2006, he accepted the position of vice president of player personnel with the Denver Nuggets.

In 2005, Chapman claimed in an interview that interracial dating during his college and pro days was looked down upon and discouraged. He also argued that players like Allan Houston and Derek Anderson were overlooked by Kentucky sportswriters while they were in high school because they were not white.
In 2013, Chapman served as an analyst for the NCAA Tournament for both CBS and Turner during the First Four and second round. He broadcast alongside Seth Davis, Steve Smith, and Matt Winer.
For the 2013-2014 season, it was announced that Chapman would serve as the network TV color analyst for the Grand Canyon University men's basketball team. The 'Lopes began their first year in transition from Division II to Division I, and Chapman served as the analyst alongside play-by-play voice Matt Rosen for Cox7 Arizona. All of the 'Lopes home games played at Grand Canyon University Arena were broadcast on Cox7 Arizona.
