UPDATE: Deadly Political Clashes In Wukari, Taraba State Escalates; Security Forces Deployed To Tackle Situation

15 dead and 40 others in Wukari political violence

Security forces have been deployed to the town of Wukari in Taraba following deadly political violence which left at least 15 dead and 40 others injured. The violence followed a court ruling over the weekend which nullified the election of Darius Ishaku, an opposition candidate, as the state governor and awarded victory to his opponent Aisha Alhassan of the governing party.

Dozens of homes and shops were also vandalized in the town which has a history of deadly religious and ethnic violence.

Mr Ishaku, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), indicated he would appeal the ruling after a court dismissed his candidacy on the grounds that the party had not followed proper procedures when nominating him.
The situation seems to be under control now with soldiers and police on the streets.
