The Russian Football Union has fired the national team's
coach, Italian Fabio Capello, the organization announced on Tuesday.
RT.com reports the decision to cancel
Capello's contract was mutual, the union said, adding that it was thankful for
the work the Italian did coaching the team and wished him luck. Earlier
the Russian sport media reported that Capello would receive €15 million in
compensation for the termination of the contract.
Capello started training
the Russian team in summer 2012 after the Euro-2012 cup, with the contract
prolonged in January 2014 until 2018, after the team secured a place in the
World Cup for the first time in 12 years. However the side's disastrous
performance at the championship and later in Eurocup qualification sparked rumours
of the manager’s eventual retirement.
