Save
the Children UK

The UN is warning that
120,000 people – most of them children – are at risk of starving to death next
year in north-east Nigeria.
In
an emergency appeal the organization is calling for more than US$1bn (£800m) in
humanitarian aid to be delivered to areas worst affected by the Boko Haram
insurgency.
The
UN describes the situation in northeast Nigeria as the biggest crisis facing
Africa today.
While
the Nigerian military has retaken large areas once controlled by the Islamist
militants, continued insecurity means farmers are unable to plant crops and aid
convoys trying to reach isolated areas face Boko Haram attacks.
The
massive food shortages are leading to widespread starvation.
The
charity Médecins sans Frontières estimated last month that thousands of
children have already died of hunger.
The
UN now says it needs to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to almost 7m
people.
After
years of violence this conflict is now entering a new phase.
And the fear is that hunger
could end up killing more people than Boko Haram.
