The Comptroller-General of Nigerian
Prisons Service, Dr. Peter Ekpendu, says many employees of the NPS are facing
various disciplinary actions with in connection with their alleged involvement
in breach of security at some prisons in the country. He stated that the spate of
jailbreaks in recent times under questionable and embarrassing circumstances,
was worrisome.
Ekpendu said this during a four-day
workshop on the proper utilization of the benefits of Prisons Welfare Insurance
Scheme in Uyo on Wednesday. He warned employees engaging in
smuggling drugs and handsets to inmates or engaging in “reprehensible acts”
that compromised security and drag the name of the service into shame, to
desist from the acts.
Ekpendu
said, “A situation where prisons staff engage themselves in trafficking drugs,
handsets and other reprehensible acts that compromise security and drag the
name of the Service to public odium will no longer be tolerated.
“You
may need to know that a number of staff are already facing various disciplinary
actions with unpredictable consequences on account of gross negligence or
inexplicable involvement in breach of security.”
According to him, NPS,
besides facing the task of “re-socializing mal-adjusted personalities,” is also
facing challenges caused by the emergence of insurgency with its attendant
carnage.
