The
South African Football Association (SAFA) has denied media reports that Bafana
Bafana will take on Nigeria on March 29. Goal investigates
Media
reports in Nigeria suggest that the Super Eagles have agreed to a friendly game
with South Africa later this month after it was confirmed that Argentina and
Uruguay had turned down the 1996 AFCON champions.
Nigeria
were scheduled to play Ghana on March 29 in London, but the encounter will no
longer take place as no country is allowed to play two matches across two
different continents in three days, according to new FIFA rules.
The
Super Eagles will play Bolivia at the Uyo International Stadium on March 26,
leaving them with no option but to seek an African opponent for their clash
three days later.
However,
Safa’s communications manager Dominic Chimhavi told Goal that there have never
been talks between the two associations over the reported friendly match.
“No,
there’s nothing like that in place,” Chimhavi told Goal.
The two nations last met in
the 2015 Afcon qualifiers. Bafana denied Stephen Keshi’s men a chance to defend
their title in the Equatorial Guinea, holding them to a 2-2 draw in Uyo late
last year.
