The National Universities
Commission (NUC) has said that poor maintenance culture by Nigerian
universities is responsible for the high percentage of non-functional and
obsolete equipment in the nation’s institutions. The Executive Secretary
of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, said this in Abuja at a seminar organized by the
commission in collaboration with Eagle Scientific Limited on Science and
Engineering Equipment Functionality, Procurement and Processes in Nigerian
universities.
The Nation report continues:
Okojie
disclosed that the commission has embarked on the auditing of equipment and
infrastructures in universities in Nigeria to ascertain their quality, quantity
and values.
According
to him, the critical challenge facing Nigerian university managers is to make
sustainable arrangements for maintenance of laboratory equipment, adding that
they should give way to more prudent maintenance culture.
He said: “We still have a
lot to do on equipment functionality, processes, specification and maintenance.
With the dwindling financial resources in our country, the Nigerian University
System (NUS) has no choice but to think outside the box.”
