The Secretary to the
Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal has said that the
current anti-corruption war by President Muhammadu Buhari is within the
confines of the Nigerian law.
Daily
Trust report continues:
He
spoke yesterday in Abuja during a meeting with the National Executives of the
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by its President Waheed Odusile.
There
have been accusation that the government was selective and not following due
process in the anti-corruption campaign.
The
SGF said that the government is fighting a sincere battle against corruption in
the interest of the nation.
According
to him, the fight against corruption is going on with vigour and for the first
time since our return to democracy 16 years ago, top public officials found to
have betrayed public trust are being asked to account for their actions. He
said President Buhari under one year in office has shown determination to
confront the challenges facing the nation, including the ailing economy to be
tackled through the 2016 budget proposals.
He said the media has a
major role to play in ensuring that the government achieves its objectives of
securing the nation, fight against corruption and restore the economy.
On his part Odusile said that the media needs access to those in government for
free flow of information in carrying out its responsibility of monitoring
governance. He told the SGF that the media is not adversaries or enemy of the
government and going through difficult time in Nigeria.
