IGP Solomon Arase |
Solomon Arase,
inspector-general of police (IGP), has advised police officers to avoid
“marrying many wives” in order to be able to take good care of their family.
TheCable
report continues:
The
police boss said some of his men have formed the habit of taking new wives when
transfer takes them out of their command.
He
was speaking in Ado-Ekiti, capital of Ekiti state, during a visit to the Ekiti
state police command.
“Stop
marrying too many wives and bear only the number of children you can cater to,”
he said.
“Some
of you have wives in your commands, but when you are transferred, you arrive in
your new commands and marry another wife and start a new family there. I think
you should stop.”
He
commended his men for working hard to combat crime in the state but warned
against extra-judicial killings. He said the force would not hesitate to
deal with officers who do not respect the rights of the people.
“I
am complaining that I have no money to send you for training, why must we now
incur more litigation?” he asked.
“Nigerians
are more intelligent now; if you infringe on their right, they will go to court
and unfortunately the IG will be the person to be sued even while he was not
there when it happened. And when I am sued, the police’s accounts will be
garnished.
“We must learn how to
respect the fundamental rights of the citizens. We have trained officers who
carry arms, and you owe the responsibility to protect lives and property and
that was why you were trained.”
