Aleksander Ceferin has
been confirmed as the new UEFA president. The Slovenian beat
Dutchman Michael van Praag in the election, by 42 votes to 13.
Ceferin
replaces Michel Platini in the role after he was handed a four year
ban from all football activity in May.
Mirror
UK report continues:
The
48-year-old is not even a member of UEFA's executive committee and was little
known before he announced his intention to run.
Van
Praag had the backing of the FA but Ceferin was overwhelmingly elected.
"I
am not a showman, I have no ego issues and I am not a man of unrealistic
promises," he told delegates before the vote.
"It's
a great honour but at the same time a great responsibility."
Former
president Platini addressed the congress in Athens prior to the vote and
insisted his conscience was clear.
"You
are going to continue this wonderful mission without me for reasons I don't
want to go into today," he said.
"I have a clear conscience, I am certain not to have made any mistake and will continue to fight this in the courts."
