South African Football Association president was on
Thursday elected mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro municipality.
iafrica.com reports Jordaan was elected
unopposed after the opposition carried out its threat to boycott the mayoral
election.
The SAFA boss was
appointed to the post by the ANC last week, as the party seeks to stabilize its
position in the municipality ahead of next year's municipal elections.
Jordaan replaces Ben
Fihla as mayor.
In his acceptance
speech, Jordaan said that he was happy to be back home, as Port Elizabeth was
where he learnt his politics.
He was the chairperson
of the ANC in PE in the early 90s, before serving as its MP between 1994 and
1997. Jordaan, though, is better known for spearheading South Africa's organization
of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
"I'm humbled by the
honour but mindful of the challenges ahead of the local government
elections," he said.
