Five miners who had been
buried underground when a mine collapsed in western Tanzania have been rescued
after more 41 days underground, having survived by eating roots. They are now receiving treatment at a local
hospital.
They
were part of a group of six miners who had set out to rescue 11 missing
colleagues when the mine caved in on them.
BBC News report continues:
Although
a search party had been sent out for the six, that was abandoned after a week
with the searchers saying hopes of finding anyone alive had faded.

But
this week other miners working nearby heard faint cries and a search was
hurriedly restarted.
The
original 11 who were missing and one of the rescue party are still not
accounted for, presumed dead.
