Fraudsters Dupe People With My Name, Says APC Governor-elect El-Rufai

Malam Nasir el-Rufai

The All Progressives Congress Governor-elect in Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, on Wednesday raised the alarm that some fraudsters had used his name to defraud unsuspecting members of the public across the state and even beyond.

Specifically, spokesman for the governor-elect, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, said the impostor created an e-mail address in el-Rufai’s name and criminally demanded money from the public.

The Punch report continues:
According to the governor-elect’s media aide, the fraudster had sent several messages to people asking them to remit the sum of N150,000 to a Mainstreet Bank account.

He urged the public to be wary of such dubious action by fraudulent element, warning that his principal never directed anybody to collect money on his behalf.

Though he said the case has been reported to ‘hotmail’ and the relevant security agencies, Aruwan cautioned the public to take the necessary precautions in order not to fall into the trap of the fraudsters.

The statement read in part, “The office of Kaduna State Governor-elect has alerted the general public of fraudulent act by an unknown impostor, purportedly in the name of the Governor-elect, Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai.

“Some fraudsters with email address: nelrufai@hotmail.com <mailto:nelrufai@hotmail.com>, claiming to be Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, Kaduna State Governor-elect, has sent scam messages, asking people to remit N150,000 to a Mainstreet Bank account.

“This is not only theft of identity but a case of fraud, impersonation and total misrepresentation of the person of the Kaduna State Governor-elect, Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai.

“We are by this notice calling on the general public to disregard any electronic message and others received in this regard. It is criminal and not from the person of the governor-elect.

“The public should not only disregard fraudster(s) impersonating Malam el-Rufai but report him/her/them to security agencies or alert the office of the governor-elect for prompt action onward prosecution.

“This is a clear case of impersonation as the governor-elect will never ask anyone for money in this way. Anyone that receives this kind of email request should know it is not from Malam el-Rufai but fraudulent elements.
“The case has been reported to Hotmail and the relevant law enforcement agencies for further necessary action.”
