decried what it described as serial corrupt practices within Nigeria’s oil sector,
saying the federal government must commence immediate implementation of the
needed reforms in the oil and gas sector.

National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and Nigeria Extractive Industries
Transparency Initiative (NEITI) also agreed to collaborate more with a view to
consolidating on the gains of the transparency initiatives recorded so far in
the nation’s oil and gas industry.
The Nation report continues:
The chairperson of the
initiative, Mrs Claire Short, who stated this after a closed door meeting with
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, regretted that some advocated oil sector reforms
in Nigeria were yet to be implemented.
Speaking to journalists
at the Defense House, Abuja, after the meeting with Osinbajo, she said
government should as a matter of urgency commence the implementation of the
suggestions proffered in the various audit reports of operations in the sectors
by the NEITI. Short, who was accompanied by officials of the NEITI, pointed out
that the serial corrupt practices within Nigeria’s oil sector do not augur well
for the country.
In his response, Osinbajo
assured that the federal government will take all necessary steps to implement
the findings and recommendations contained in the audit reports.
“The vice president
reaffirmed the federal governments’ commitment to the implementation of the
EITI principles as part of plans to reform the oil and gas sector,” a statement
by the NEITI’s director of Communication, Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, read in part.
