Nigeria would today across various states mark this year's World Rabies Day. 2016 marks the 10th World
Rabies Day, a milestone in rabies prevention. This year's theme is Rabies: Educate. Vaccinate. Eliminate.
Since
it began in 2007, the rabies community have aligned to make World Rabies Day a
global phenomenon. In that time, its life-saving rabies prevention messages
have reached millions of people in over 100 different countries.
Dr Belema Okafor, a veterinary surgeon and university lecturer, told our correspondent that "Rabies is very important because it is a zoonotic disease, this is diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Humans interact with animals as pets so tackling the incidence of zoonotic diseases becomes vital.
"In Nigeria, dogs are the specific animals that transmit rabies through their bites."
She therefore encouraged all dog owners and handlers to ensure that they vaccinate their pets.
The Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Dr Nathaniel Bakura, stated that the Rivers State veterinary doctors would hold a public lecture based on this year's theme, to be delivered by Professor C. D. Ezeokoli of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, to mark the event.
