Kenya Names Interim Federation Chief Amid Graft Probe

Athletics Kenya on Tuesday named former army chief Jackson Tuwei as the new temporary president to replace Isaiah Kiplagat, a day after he was suspended with two other officials by the IAAF ethics commission. Kiplagat, who led the national athletics federation for more than 20 years, was suspended along with his vice-president David Okeyo and former treasurer Joseph Kinyua over suspicions they had siphoned off sponsorship money from Nike and subverted anti-doping controls.

₦2.8tr Needed To Revive Lake Chad — Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari said over US$14 billion (₦2.789trillion) is needed to revive the Lake Chad to help check the exodus of African youths to Europe for greener pastures. He said at least five million people from Central African Republic to the Lake Chad Basin countries (Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Benin), who risk their lives crossing the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean to Europe for greener pastures,  will be rehabilitated.

South Africa Tops Continent's Corruption Survey; Ghana & Nigeria Some Of The Worst Affected

Corruption is on the rise in Africa, with South Africa topping the list of countries where citizens believe the problem has got worse in the last year, said a Transparency International survey released Tuesday. According to the report, 83 percent of South Africans interviewed felt that corruption had increased, with Ghana and Nigeria also among the worst-affected nations.

China's President Arrives In Zimbabwe; Xi Jinping Touches Down In Harare

China's President Xi Jinping has arrived in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare, at the start of a two-day visit. For a government desperate for foreign direct investment and struggling to raise revenue he is a welcome guest.

BBC Africa Live reports that there are several bid deals, spanning manufacturing, agriculture and mining, waiting to be signed.

Nigeria's Ex-National Security Adviser Arrested

Authorities in Nigeria have arrested former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki. He worked with the last President Goodluck Jonathan.  Mr Dasuki is accused of embezzling about US$2bn by a committee investigating arms procurement during the last administration.

Roch Marc Christian Kabore has won presidential elections in Burkina Faso, the electoral commission says. It says Mr Kabore, a former prime minister, secured 53.5% of the vote on Sunday. It was the first election since last year's popular uprising which toppled longstanding President Blaise Compaoré.

Japan Pension Fund, World's Biggest, Loses US$64 Bn After Stock Shift


Japan's public pension fund — the world's biggest — lost a whopping US$64 billion in the July-September quarter, according to a new report, as global equity markets plunged this summer on fears over China's economy. The drop in the 135 trillion yen (US$1.1 trillion) Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) — the worst quarterly fall since 2008 — came after it decided last year to double the amount of equities in its bond-heavy portfolio to generate higher returns.

Violence erupted at the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja on Monday as supporters of the new Kogi State governorship candidate of the party, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, and James Faleke’s loyalists engaged themselves in a bloody clash. Faleke was the running mate of the late APC governorship candidate in the November 21 election in the state, Alhaji Abubakar Audu.

Stones, sticks and other missiles were deployed in different directions by thugs, who broke through police barricades in an attempt to force their way into the party headquarters.

Andy Murray made it a couple of days to remember as he backed up his team's historic Davis Cup victory with a nomination for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2015. The Scotsman's heroics with his tennis team-mates in Great Britain's victory at the weekend propelled him onto the shortlist alongside the likes of bookmakers' favourite heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill, and new heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury.

Murray won the personality gong in 2013 following his Wimbledon and Olympic success. This year's winner will be decided by a public vote and announced at a live event from Belfast on Sunday December 20.

A 20-year-old woman in South Africa has pleaded guilty to trying to sell her child for 5,000 rand (US$346; £230) on advertising website Gumtree, authorities say.

Zama Bongiwe Madlala, named for the first time, was charged with human trafficking and money laundering after she posted an advert for the baby. 

The first advert was removed - the second was labelled baby car seat - Gumtree


A National Prosecuting Authority spokesman told the BBC that she would remain under house arrest until her next court appearance early in the new year in Pietermaritzburg, the capital of South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province.

One Dead, 30 Injured In Strathmore University Terror Drill

One woman died and about 30 people were injured, some critically when a terror attack drill at Strathmore University in Nairobi caused panic among hundreds of students and staff. "We can confirm we have one fatality this evening. One staff member by name Esther Kidambi, age 33 years, who has died from severe injuries," said a statement from the university communication director Betty Ngala.

Kindambi is said to have jumped from the 3rd floor of the building.

Burkina Faso Ex-PM 'In Lead'; Kabore Holds Strong Lead — Commission

Burkina Faso's former Prime Minister Roch Marc Kabore appeared to have a strong lead as results came in from Sunday's presidential election, the first election since long-serving ruler Blaise Compaoré's forced resignation last year, Reuters news agency reports.

Provisional results from around 41% of the West African nation's communes showed that Mr Kabore had 54% of the vote against 29% for Zephirin Diabre, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, it reports.

IAAF Suspends Three Kenyan Officials

Three senior members of Athletics Kenya (AK) have been provisionally suspended for 180 days with immediate effect by athletics world governing body, the IAAF. The trio - Isaiah Kiplagat, president of AK, David Okeyo, vice-president of AK and IAAF council member, and Joseph Kinyua, former treasurer of AK and Kenya Team Leader at the IAAF 2015 World Championships - are not allowed to hold any office or position at either AK or the IAAF.

According to a statement from the IAAF Ethics Commission, the trio are being investigated for "potential subversion of the anti-doping control process" in Kenya and "potential improper diversion from Athletics Kenya of funds received from Nike".

Blaze Kills Government Girls Secondary School, Jogana Students; Stampede 'Caused' Nigeria School Deaths

A fire has killed at least seven female students at a boarding school in a village some 20km (12 miles) from northern Nigeria's main city, Kano, Premium Times news site reports. Twenty-one others were injured in the fire at the government-run school in Jogana village. The fire occurred at the school's biggest hostel when students were sleeping, Premium Times reports.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Northern Muslim Elite Laid Foundation For Boko Haram — Kukah

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, says terrorism in Nigeria indirectly created by northern leaders, who used religion to deceive poor Muslims. Kukah said this in his keynote address at a conference organized by the Islamic Welfare Foundation at the Fountain University, Osogbo.

At the event titled, ‘The Muslim agenda for Nigeria: Challenges of development and good governance’, the cleric said the fresh agitation for an Islamic state by Boko Haram could be traced to the promise made by northern leaders to ensure the total implementation of Sharia law.
