Governors
of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will hold an “emergency meeting” on
Thursday to discuss the crises in the national assembly.
The
election of Bukola Saraki as senate president and Yakubu Dogara as speaker
against the wishes of the APC hierarchy has been generating controversy in
the party.
Ahmad
Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila were the party’s preferred candidates for the
respective positions, but both men lost after the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) backed their opponents.
TheCable report continues:
In
a notice issued late Tuesday night, Rochas Okorocha, governor of Imo state and
chairman of the progressive governors, invited his colleagues to the Thursday
meeting at the Imo lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.
The
meeting is scheduled to start at 8pm and the governors are expected to take a
position ahead of the APC national executive committee (NEC) which will
hold on Friday at 10am.
President
Muhammadu Buhari is expected to attend the NEC.
Saraki
and Dogara are also members of the party’s NEC and are expected to be at the
party – the first time the president would be meeting with the “rebels”.
The
governors are hopeful that the crises would be resolved by this weekend after
previous meetings by the various interests in the party failed
to calm matters.
