Both Christian and Muslim
leaders attended the funeral service, before the private burial of the Nigerian
monarch, the Ooni of Ife. Nigeria's Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was among the
dignitaries who attended the service to pay tribute to Oba Okunade Sijuwade,
the foremost traditional ruler of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, Benin and Togo,
Abubakar Madagali added.
Mourning
will continue until Wednesday, he said.
The
practice of burying someone alive with the king had long been abolished, said
Mr Madagali, the leader of the Hausa ethnic group in Ife. A
revered monarch in Nigeria - the Ooni of Ife - has been buried, the BBC Hausa
service is reporting.
Oba Okunade Sijuwade, a
king of the Yoruba ethnic group, one of the biggest in Nigeria, was buried at a
private ceremony in Ife city, seen as the cradle of Yoruba civilization, it
