A court in Mozambique has
acquitted a prominent academic and journalist charged with libelling former
President Armando Guebuza.
BBC
reports that Economist Carlos Castel Branco criticized Mr Guebuza in a Facebook
post in 2013, and newspaper editor Fernando Mbanze republished the post.
The
judge said the two had exercised their right to freedom of speech, reports BBC
Africa producer Zenaida Machado.
"Freedom
of expression must be broader than the simple exercise of defending the
president's image," she quotes the judge as saying.
"To
characterize the government as fascist might be an exaggeration, but it is not
a crime. It's the opinion of the accused," the judge added.
