Uganda's President Yoweri
Museveni is due to to visit Sudan today for talks with President Omar al-Bashir
- his first trip to the neighbouring state since 2005. The two countries have
had a strained relationship for decades with each side accusing the other of
supporting their opponents. Last year Khartoum recalled its ambassador to
Kampala over claims Uganda was harbouring Sudanese rebels.
The
most pressing issue at today's talks will be the ongoing fighting in South
Sudan between government and rebel forces.
Over
the years, Mr Bashir has been a key supporter of rebel leader Riek Machar,
while Uganda has troops in South Sudan to back the government.
"I think we need to
assure Bashir absolutely that we're there squarely to ensure that there's no
meltdown in Juba," said Uganda's Minister for International Affairs,
Okello Oryem.
