A Lagos State
Magistrate’s Court in Ebute-Metta yesterday ordered 17 people arrested in
connection with the killing of the Managing Director, Lekki Worldwide
Investment Limited, Mr. Tajudeen Disu, on Monday to be remanded in custody.
Delivering
ruling in an application brought by the State Criminal Investigation Department
(SCID), Magistrate (Mrs) Folashade Botoku said she aligned with the argument of
the prosecution counsel which asked for the remand of the suspects for more
days.
Disu
was killed during a peace mission to one of the communities in the Free Trade Zone area in Ibeju Lekki after which 17 suspects were arrested by the DSS.
Daily Trust report continues:
Mrs
Botoku however said what was brought before her was not a charge but an
application to remand the suspects in custody to enable the police conduct
thorough investigation. On the application for bail as requested by the counsel
to the accused persons, she said while Section 264 empowers the court to grant
the leave to remand them in custody, the same section does not empower it to
grant them bail since it lacks jurisdiction to hear a murder case and cannot
therefore consider the application for bail.
The prosecution argued that
the court has the jurisdiction to grant the police an order to remand the
suspects in custody for a minimum of 30 days. The suspects include; Dele Ajayi,
Alhaji Tajudeen Jegede, Saidi Akanni, Oyelade Taiwo, Sunday Bulus, Abiola
Ogunsanwo, Okunaya Stephen, Taiwo Gafar, Agunrege Banji, Gafaru Ahmed, Moses
Okoro, Talabi Quadri, Ipaye Oriyomi, Quadri Yusuf and Tunde Yusu.
