South African police are stepping up patrols in some
areas of the coastal city of Durban after deadly attacks on immigrant-owned
shops there in recent days.
Police Col. Jay Naicker said Tuesday that two people
were arrested during unrest on Monday night and another 28 were detained on
Sunday. He says police will be "doubling up our resources" to curb
the looting.

South African media say several people have died in
the looting and arson in some Durban neighborhoods.
The attacks have targeted shops owned by immigrants,
many of whom come from other African countries. Some South Africans accuse the
immigrants of taking jobs and opportunities away from them.
President Jacob Zuma has condemned the violence.
