Tonight, September 4,
2015, is the opening ceremony for the 11th All-Africa Games, which are
being held in Congo-Brazzaville. Sporting stars from across the continent
will be descending on the capital Brazzaville to compete in the event,
which takes place every four years. Athletics,
as well as football, basketball, boxing and many other sports are all
included in this year's games.
Meanwhile
a sprinter from Sierra Leone who ended up sleeping rough on the streets of
London has been offered a sports scholarship in the UK, The Guardian Newspaper
reports.
Jimmy
Thoronka, 20, was his country's top 100m runner but did not return home after
the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year amid fears over Ebola.
Thoronka
is still waiting to find out if he will be granted permission to stay in the
UK, before he is able to take up the offer at the University of East London
(UEL).
"I
am so happy to have received this offer," Thoronka told The Guardian.
"They invited me to
visit and have a look at all the athletics and academic facilities. It was
fantastic. If I am able to study and train there, it will be my dream."
